My sme SAV 2024 – popularization event

June is traditionally the month when we, the scientists at SAS, go out among the people. It is no different in 2024, this time during the “My sme SAV” event.

On Saturday 15 June, our colleagues Lukáš Michaleje and Ján Výbošt’ok took part in the popularization activity “My sme SAV” at Hviezdoslav Square in Bratislava. Our colleagues presented our work in the form of LEGO® world.

Are we crazy? How on earth are LEGO® and geography related? The object of research in geography is the landscape. Thanks to the LEGO® building blocks we can demonstrate various elements and processes taking place in the landscape. The different types of landscape then simplistically depict the individual research tasks that have been going on at the Institute of Geography of the Slovak Academy of Sciences for a long time. In the Department of Physical Geography, this is mainly research on river landscapes, their geomorphology, and natural hazards. Research in the Department of Geoinformatics, thanks to the use of satellite data, focuses on research into the desertification of agricultural soils or the mowing of arable land. In the Human Geography Unit, research focuses on suburbanisation processes, but also on different forms of transport.

Did you miss us in Bratislava? You can make up for it already during the next weekend at the “Víkend so SAV” event in Trnava. Our colleagues will be there with LEGO® World on Saturday 22 June 2024.
