Ongoing field research on Carpathian meadows

Carpathian grasslands are characterized by extraordinary species richness from a pan-European, and even global, perspective, especially in regions with preserved low-input agriculture without artificial fertilizers and cooperative large-scale farming.


An interdisciplinary team of botanists, geographers and ethnologists from the Slovak Academy of Sciences study Carpathian meadows and pastures. In recent days, field research has been, or is still ongoing, at all of the areas of interest in Slovakia, and our colleagues – Róbert Pazúr, Šimon Opravil, Tomáš Goga and Zuzana Pazúrová – are also taking part in it. In addition to intensive botanical data collection in three Slovak municipalities – Nová Bošáca, Liptovské Revúce and Nová Sedlica, they are involved in data collection for the development of a model of mowing and grazing of permanent grasslands, identification of abandoned grasslands in Slovakia, as well as necessary project meetings.

The outputs of the current field campaigns will be directly implemented in the outputs of the scientific projects:
