Geography Education in Primary Schools in Slovakia in the Context of the New State Educational Programme

Our colleague Dr. Matej Vojtek, PhD. participated in the creation of a chapter in an edited book published by Springer Nature.

In the chapter, which was published in the book entitled Fourth International Handbook of Globalisation, Education and Policy Research (editor Joseph Zajda), the authors focused on the education and knowledge of primary school pupils in Slovakia in the field of natural sciences, with special attention to geography. In the introductory part, the chapter deals with the results of pupils in science literacy in the latest PISA 2022 testing. In the next part, the authors describe the current curricular reform in primary schools in Slovakia, focusing on natural sciences. Following this, the authors analyze the new State Educational Programme (SEP) in the context of changes related to geography using a SWOT analysis. The new SEP aims to globalize education in primary schools using innovative methods to bring it closer to the needs of the 21st century. At the end of the chapter, the authors provide recommendations for improving the results of primary school pupils as well as propose changes in the new SEP, related mainly to the subject of geography.

The chapter Globalisation, Education, Policy, and Curricula Issues: Globalization of Science Education at Primary Schools in Slovakia With Regard to Geography is published on the website of the Springer Nature publisher.

The chapter is part of research within the following projects:

  • KEGA (č. 033UKF-4/2023) entitled “Implementation of Digital Technologies in the Teaching of Geography“, whose leading researcher, and also the main author of the chapter, is Dr. Jana Vojteková, PhD. from the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Regional Development, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Informatics, Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra.
