In 2025, the 77th volume of the Geografický časopis / Geographical Journal was published in four issues, featuring 16 scientific articles. The volume’s content reflected a wide spectrum of contemporary geographical research – from demographic and socio-geographical topics, through environmental risks and climate extremes, to remote sensing, geoinformatics, and advanced geospatial modelling. Thanks to a fully established editorial system, the editorial board managed to speed up the review process (76 days, median), and the executive editors need only 5 days to make their initial decision. These figures represent a significant advantage in both the international and the Slovak publishing environments.
Issue 1 (77/2025)
The first issue of the year focused on key demographic and environmental issues in the Slovak and European context. The published articles dealt with flood risk assessment in marginalised Roma settlements in Slovakia; regional differences and population ageing forecasts at the district level; the development and spatial inequalities of the kindergarten network; and the analysis of trends and forecasts of extreme precipitation in the Pinios River basin in Greece. The issue combined applied research with analytical approaches useful for public policy and regional planning.
Issue 2 (77/2025)
The second issue brought a distinctly interdisciplinary perspective on regional development, social inequalities, and landscape changes. The articles addressed the issue of empowering peripheral municipalities in Iran, the analysis of regional “silent divergence” and deepening inequalities in Slovakia, the development of poverty in the context of the global polycrisis, and the mapping of land cover in areas affected by war conflicts. The issue’s thematic diversity highlighted the journal’s strong focus on current social and geopolitical challenges.
Issue 3 (77/2025)
The third issue focused heavily on physical geography, climatology, and geoinformatics. The published articles presented projections of extreme temperatures, precipitation, and hydrological indices in Senegal; an evaluation of the transition from CORINE Land Cover to the CLCplus system in Slovakia; geospatial modelling of habitat quality in Iran; and modelling of future urbanisation in the Gorgan region of Iran. The issue emphasised the importance of remote sensing, GIS, and modelling of future development scenarios in geographical research.
Issue 4 (77/2025)
The final issue of the year focused on the interconnection of demographic processes, natural resources, and methodological innovations in physical geography. The articles analysed the impacts of changes in fertility and migration on the future development of Slovakia’s population, the possibilities of detecting riverbed bathymetry using unmanned aerial vehicles, the relationship between groundwater resources and the spatial distribution of the population in Kosovo, and issues of retail accessibility and social sustainability in the historic Alfama district of Lisbon. The issue confirmed the strong potential of geographical research for sustainable development.
Editorial and publication process in 2025
In 2025, the journal processed 60 manuscripts, with a rejection rate of 73%, confirming its emphasis on the quality of published content. A significant positive was the fast and efficient editorial process – 5 days to the first decision and 76 days (median) for the review process. All articles were published in open access mode, and the journal maintained a stable position in the Web of Science (ESCI) and Scopus (Q3) databases.
Acknowledgements and call for authors
Finally, the editorial board of Geografický časopis would like to thank all authors for their trust and for the high-quality scientific contributions they submitted for review in 2025, as well as the reviewers and members of the editorial board for their professional, time-consuming and responsible work, without which it would not be possible to maintain the high standard of the publication process. The significant proportion of reviewers from Slovakia and abroad confirms the journal’s international character and its anchoring in the wider geographical community.
The editorial board also invites authors from the fields of geography, geoinformatics, and related disciplines to submit original scientific papers, review studies, and methodological contributions for review. The Geographical Journal offers a transparent and effective review process, open access to published articles, and a platform for professional discussion on current challenges in geographical research at the national and international levels.
