Hackathon on three-dimensional urban tree monitoring

From June 1 to 5, 2026, the Institute of Geography of the Slovak Academy of Sciences will host an international hackathon focused on three-dimensional monitoring of urban trees in Sad (Park) Janka Kráľa. The event is organised as part of the COST Action CA23148 – European Network for the Integrative Approach of Urban Forestry (INTUF) project.

The hackathon will bring together researchers and experts in remote sensing, urban planning, forestry, environmental modelling, and 3D data processing. The main goal of the event is to work together on the collection, processing, and analysis of data obtained using modern technologies such as terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), mobile LiDAR, unmanned aerial systems (UAV), and photogrammetry, and their application in the monitoring and inventory of urban greenery.

The event is part of the INTUF network, which supports interdisciplinary cooperation across Europe. Participation is open to researchers from COST countries, with selected participants fully reimbursed in accordance with COST rules. Special attention will be given to young researchers and doctoral students, who will have the opportunity to:

  • work in multidisciplinary teams on real data.
  • expand their technical skills in the field of 3D data processing,
  • establish new international contacts
