European cartographic conference EuroCarto 2024

The regional cartographic conference EuroCarto 2024 was held at the Technical University of Vienna (TU Wien) from 8 Sept. 2024 to 11 Sept. 2024.


On the first day, workshops organised by the individual commissions of the International Cartographic Association (ICA) were held. In the following days, more than 170 lectures were given by more than 350 participants from 54 countries, and another 30 papers were presented in poster form. Some of the most interesting presentations included a lecture by Kenneth Field from ESRI Inc. presenting innovative maps of the 2024 U.S. Total Eclipse, a lecture by William Cartwright from RMIT University in Australia on the mapping of the Italian endurance race Mille Miglia, as well as the presentation of the books The Atlas of Unusual Borders and The Atlas of Microstates by Zoran Nikolić.

From the Institute of Geography SAS, Daniel Szatmári, Ján Feranec, and Šimon Opravil participated in the conference. In section Analysis 1, the latter presented a lecture entitled Monitoring and interactive mapping of illegal environmental activities on the example of Slovakia. The presented paper is part of the outputs of the ongoing LAPIA project supported by the European Space Agency.
